On the train yesterday
In the inner reaches of the Pakenham-Cranbourne line I began to realise something.
Fuck, bits of Melbourne are identical to Sydney.
It didn’t help that I had already been travelling at least five hours that day, including nearly two behind the wheel of my uncle’s car, noting that I haven’t been in a situation of repeatedly starting a manual from stand-still in some months.

Hostage negotiation classes are mandatory Tony →
How to negotiate with your implacable foes, Tony Abbott style:
Hope that you already have the advantage, if you do not, hope that carping and whinging will get the media on your side. If there is no media to instrumentalise so, do not begin negotiations.
Demand that your enemies do exactly what you would.
Pray you are not negotiating with anyone who has a gun in his back pocket.

“It’s Okay to be Neither,” By Melissa Bollow Tempel
Alie arrived at our 1st-grade classroom wearing a sweatshirt with a hood. I asked her to take off her hood, and she refused. I thought she was just being difficult and ignored it. After breakfast we got in line for art, and I noticed that she still had not removed her hood. When we arrived at the art room, I said:...

HIGH SCHOOL DEBATE COACH THAT’S A THING AMAZING
I know! I love debating and I love being in a position of authority!
Only thing is I haven’t started yet so I can’t put it as my job on Facebook and impress my friends and family.

But I’m now, well, future-tense now, no longer unemployed or without immediate career prospects!
I’m an employed high school debate coach, with super! And a trades union intern!
Hooray for prospects!
Hooray for my grandmother calling me a communist!

Watching an episode of Diagnosis Murder
They’re talking about “the drug ecstasy”.
It’s endearing to think that ecstasy was once novel.

When my mum writes a shopping list
She calls self-raising flour “SR Flour”.
I choose to believe she buys “Socialist Revolutionary Flour”.
And I wonder if there are other revolutionarily branded products. Bolshevik Biscuts, Shining Path Weed-Killer, Marxmallows.
Then I wonder, where would one by such things? Brand-awareness doesn’t come naturally to me, I buy the homebrand milk.

Benefits of being a New Zealander (as I see them)
MMP electoral system, political nerds wet dream.
Chevrolet branded cars, admittedly they’re all Holdens, but it’s the thought that counts.
Superior national anthem, sorry, even the second verse of Advance Australia Fair will never match the Maori verse of God Defend New Zealand. Though, I’ll admit that the explicit religious imagery is a bit off-putting.
Better Rugby.
